Recently I stumbled across an Internet site that displayed stunning photographs of 10 animals whose existence, until recently, had been totally unknown to our highly educated scientific community.
I must admit that my confidence is shaken in these same scientists when they for so long have overlooked a spider large enough to eat birds and venomous snakes, a monkey that looks like a cast member of Monster, Inc. (the Lesula), and a Louisiana Pancake Batfish that appears already to have been rolled around in Zatarain’s Creole Seasoning mix by an overzealous Cajun chef.
These aren’t exactly one-celled bacteria that are crawling around under our toenails — they’re pretty big dudes. And yet biologists who didn’t have a clue they exist will tell us with certainty how many species become extinct each day – and it’s your fault.

The good thing about a book like Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America is that it’s real reportage about murder in the African American ghetto; it’s not just narrative from the usual social justice warriors.
And when author Jill Leovy gets to talk about her book on NPR’s Fresh Air in “’Ghettoside’ Explores Why Murder is Invisible in Los Angeles” we get to see what is really going on, despite the author’s knee-jerk liberalism.
Author Leovy’s angle is that routine murder in African American ghettos is invisible, in the sense that individual murders don’t get a write-up in the paper. So she decided to do something about it, The Homicide Report, a blog that documents each and every murder in LA.
In the modest and unassuming manner natural to this column, I advance a small proposal for the emendation of such tatters of the Constitution as can be found: For voting in federal elections, we should employ a literacy test to disenfranchise the majority of the population, to the infinite betterment of the country. This wise move should be accompanied by an increase in the voting age to twenty-five.
The necessity cannot be denied. Consider the following:
Forty-three percent of Americans think Saddam Hussein was personally involved in 9/11.
Sixty-four percent cannot name the three branches of the federal government.
Fourteen percent are illiterate.
Twenty-six percent think the sun goes around the earth.
These numbers may be understood in various ways. To a curmudgeon, who obtains a sour satisfaction from the endless repetition of human folly, they provide the satisfactions of confirmation. We all enjoy being right. In practical terms, they mean that democracy, or our mild approximation thereto, is a sham, a fraud, an impossibility, and a bad idea. No one so blankly ignorant, so mentally without furniture, so muddle-headed, limited, and barren, should be allowed within hailing range of a voting booth.
Such people cannot possibly kno anything of national questions. Those who live in a featureless tundra of the mind usually do so from stupidity. It is unreasonable to blame them for a genetic condition over which they have no control, but it is equally unreasonable to allow them to vote. As for the fairly intelligent who through intellectual shiftlessness learn nothing, I have no patience with them. What possible cause is there for thinking the willfully dull, the deliberately ignorant, or the dull and ignorant, are ompetent to influence policy on matters that they cannot spell? Given that everyone today has access to virtually every book ever written and to the internet, there is little excuse for living in Oprah fog and Eminem darkness.

In the current political environment Conservative voters are a cause of fear in the Establishment GOP. It is exactly what you have said above, the need for a loose definition of and a mandate of purity in conservatism that paves the way for Progressives, in Presidential elections to win. Every two years before the midterm elections, we hear Republican candidates promise that if elected they will rein in the Obama administration excesses – Obamacare, amnesty, trillion-dollar deficits, increasing government regulation, legislative transparency, and unlawful executive orders. Like Lucy promising Charlie Brown a shot at the football, Republicans promise each time that things will be different. Yet Lucy continues to lift the football at the last minute, leaving the hapless Charlie Brown kicking at air.
Immediately after the November midterms, the president announced his amnesty plan. Republicans, fresh from landslide victories in congressional, state, and local elections, were well-positioned to flex their newfound muscle by re-establishing constitutional checks and balances on an overzealous executive branch. Instead, Senate Majority Leader McConnell folded like a cheap suit, abandoning efforts to defund President Obama’s amnesty efforts.
Tell me again why we need Republican majorities in Congress.
Sure, we get the usual excuses. Harry Reid and the minority control the Senate to such an extent that Reid can force Republicans to abandon an extremely popular position. That pesky filibuster – the same one that Democrats eliminated a few years ago when they were in power and wanted to bypass Republican resistance for judicial and executive appointments. Why can’t Senator McConnell trigger the same “nuclear option” now?

Recently I stumbled across an Internet site that displayed stunning photographs of 10 animals whose existence, until recently, had been totally unknown to our highly educated scientific community.
I must admit that my confidence is shaken in these same scientists when they for so long have overlooked a spider large enough to eat birds and venomous snakes, a monkey that looks like a cast member of Monster, Inc. (the Lesula), and a Louisiana Pancake Batfish that appears already to have been rolled around in Zatarain’s Creole Seasoning mix by an overzealous Cajun chef.
These aren’t exactly one-celled bacteria that are crawling around under our toenails — they’re pretty big dudes. And yet biologists who didn’t have a clue they exist will tell us with certainty how many species become extinct each day – and it’s your fault.

In the modest and unassuming manner natural to this column, I advance a small proposal for the emendation of such tatters of the Constitution as can be found: For voting in federal elections, we should employ a literacy test to disenfranchise the majority of the population, to the infinite betterment of the country. This wise move should be accompanied by an increase in the voting age to twenty-five.
The necessity cannot be denied. Consider the following:
Forty-three percent of Americans think Saddam Hussein was personally involved in 9/11.
Sixty-four percent cannot name the three branches of the federal government.
Fourteen percent are illiterate.
Twenty-six percent think the sun goes around the earth.
These numbers may be understood in various ways. To a curmudgeon, who obtains a sour satisfaction from the endless repetition of human folly, they provide the satisfactions of confirmation. We all enjoy being right. In practical terms, they mean that democracy, or our mild approximation thereto, is a sham, a fraud, an impossibility, and a bad idea. No one so blankly ignorant, so mentally without furniture, so muddle-headed, limited, and barren, should be allowed within hailing range of a voting booth.
Such people cannot possibly kno anything of national questions. Those who live in a featureless tundra of the mind usually do so from stupidity. It is unreasonable to blame them for a genetic condition over which they have no control, but it is equally unreasonable to allow them to vote. As for the fairly intelligent who through intellectual shiftlessness learn nothing, I have no patience with them. What possible cause is there for thinking the willfully dull, the deliberately ignorant, or the dull and ignorant, are ompetent to influence policy on matters that they cannot spell? Given that everyone today has access to virtually every book ever written and to the internet, there is little excuse for living in Oprah fog and Eminem darkness.

In the current political environment Conservative voters are a cause of fear in the Establishment GOP. It is exactly what you have said above, the need for a loose definition of and a mandate of purity in conservatism that paves the way for Progressives, in Presidential elections to win. Every two years before the midterm elections, we hear Republican candidates promise that if elected they will rein in the Obama administration excesses – Obamacare, amnesty, trillion-dollar deficits, increasing government regulation, legislative transparency, and unlawful executive orders. Like Lucy promising Charlie Brown a shot at the football, Republicans promise each time that things will be different. Yet Lucy continues to lift the football at the last minute, leaving the hapless Charlie Brown kicking at air.
Immediately after the November midterms, the president announced his amnesty plan. Republicans, fresh from landslide victories in congressional, state, and local elections, were well-positioned to flex their newfound muscle by re-establishing constitutional checks and balances on an overzealous executive branch. Instead, Senate Majority Leader McConnell folded like a cheap suit, abandoning efforts to defund President Obama’s amnesty efforts.
Tell me again why we need Republican majorities in Congress.
Sure, we get the usual excuses. Harry Reid and the minority control the Senate to such an extent that Reid can force Republicans to abandon an extremely popular position. That pesky filibuster – the same one that Democrats eliminated a few years ago when they were in power and wanted to bypass Republican resistance for judicial and executive appointments. Why can’t Senator McConnell trigger the same “nuclear option” now?

Fast forward to my part of the town about every sixth car is a cop, performing many pull overs, speed traps, red light traps, DUI checkpoints and red light cameras.
